Closing an account

It only takes a minute online

We’re sorry that you are closing your account with us, but we’re of course happy to help you further. Find out how to close a personal current or savings account.

Checklist before you close the account

  1. Reservation on your debit card
Please note that there is no reservation left on your debit card, otherwise your account cannot be closed.
  2. Make sure your balance is €0
Make sure your account is empty and that you cancel your overdraft facility. You can only close your account if the balance is €0.
  3. Download your statements and overviews
Download your statements and/or your annual statement.  You will have to pay for these if you need them after you close the account.
  4. Share your new account number
If you have insurance, a mortgage or a loan provided by ABN AMRO, please let us know your new account number now to make sure payment orders can still be processed. Also do this for any other payments you may have.
  5. If this is the last account you are closing:
    • Don’t forget to cancel your credit card if you have one. You can do this through ABN AMRO Credit Card Services.
    • You can’t close your current account if you still have a savings account. This is because you always need a current account when you have a savings account.

Closing an account when someone passes away

It is always sad when someone close to you passes away. You need to make a lot of arrangements, even though this is the last thing on your mind. The first step towards closing a deceased person’s account is to notify us of the death. We will then help you further.

Have you already notified us of the death?
If the name of the account has already been changed to ‘Heirs of’, you can no longer close the account yourself online. Please contact us so that we can tell you what to do.
