OVpay: the new way to check in and out on public transport

Decide for yourself how to pay

Forgot your public transport smart card or don’t have one? Don’t worry. With OVpay, you can check in and out using your contactless ABN AMRO debit card or credit card, or using your mobile phone or wearable device. It’s an easy, secure and quick way to pay for your journey. OVpay works at more and more locations and is accepted by all public transport operators in the Netherlands. Whether you are travelling by bus or by train, OVpay lets you check in and out using your:

  • contactless debit card
  • contactless credit card
  • mobile phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay enabled
  • wearable device

How OVpay works

Hold your debit card, credit card or mobile phone up to the card reader to check in. After your journey, check out in the exact same way using the same means of payment. So, if you checked in with your debit card, make sure you also check out with your debit card.

Where it works

Checking in and out on public transport using your debit card, credit card or mobile phone works at more and more locations and is accepted by all public transport operators in the Netherlands. Go to the OVpay website to see where you can use OVpay.

How you pay and your journey details

The fares for any journeys you have made will be added up at the end of the day and debited from your account as one total amount the next day. This payment is easy to spot in your account overview.

For details of your journeys, go to the OVpay website. Fill in the reference number made up of 18 digits and letters, starting with NLOV, along with the amount debited from your account to get a summary of your journey and the fares charged.

Frequently asked questions

You most certainly can. You can use OVpay with your contactless ABN AMRO debit card or contactless ABN AMRO credit card. You can also use OVpay with:

  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • wearable devices

At present, OVpay only lets you check in and out without using a season ticket or a discount. So, if you have a season ticket or a discount, please keep using your public transport smart card for now. In the future, you will be able to use OVpay along with a season ticket or discount. When exactly this will be is not yet known.

Please contact the OVpay customer service desk on 0900 1433 or 0031 10 892 50 63 (usual call charges apply). Their customer service is open Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 9.30 p.m., and on weekends between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. You can also find more information on the  OVpay website .

You need to have enough money in your account to be able to pay for all the journeys you make in one day. This is because all journeys will be debited from your account the next day as one single payment. If the debit doesn’t go through because there are insufficient funds in the account, your debit card or credit card will be blocked for checking in and out on public transport until you have paid the amount due.

In your account overview, you will find a reference number starting with NLOV followed by 14 digits and letters. Enter this number, along with the debited amount, on the OVpay website to get a summary of your journey and the fares charged. You can also check your journey details in the OVpay app.
