Frequently asked questions

When you withdraw cash without a debit card, you open the ABN AMRO app, scan a QR code and don’t need to enter your PIN. Find out more about withdrawing cash without a debit card.

To make a contactless withdrawal, you don’t need the ABN AMRO app and you don’t scan a QR code. Instead, you hold your debit card, telephone or wearable against the cash machine’s NFC reader and enter your PIN.

The limit for contactless withdrawals is the same as for withdrawing cash with your debit card (i.e. your card limit).

So this limit applies to both contactless withdrawals and to withdrawals made by inserting your debit card into a cash machine. You can’t choose a different limit for each method. Here’s how to change your debit card limit.

No, you can’t make contactless withdrawals and deposits at a Geldmaat coin machine.

No, you can’t. Anyone with a debit card can automatically make contactless withdrawals and deposits. It is up to you whether you do this or not. You can still insert your debit card into a cash machine as usual. In both cases, you must enter your PIN for security reasons.

There can be three reasons for this:

  1. You haven’t activated your debit card
In this case, check the status of your debit card on Internet Banking or in the ABN AMRO app.
  2. The NFC antenna hasn’t been activated
The antenna in your debit card must be active. This happens automatically the first time you withdraw cash or make a payment by inserting your card into a machine (a cash machine or shop payment terminal).
  3. The NFC antenna is defective
If your debit card is active and you’ve already used it to withdraw cash or make a payment (by inserting it into a cash machine or payment terminal), the NFC antenna may be damaged. In this case, you’ll need to replace your debit card.

Check whether your NFC antenna is damaged by making a contactless payment in a shop. If this doesn’t work either, request a replacement debit card.

If you enter an incorrect PIN three times, your debit card will be blocked. It doesn’t matter whether you were trying to withdraw or deposit cash using your debit card, telephone or wearable.

You’ll still be able to use your telephone or wearable to make contactless withdrawals or deposits. If you want to use your debit card again, simply unblock it on Internet Banking or in the ABN AMRO app.
